Color-struck

Amari Jackson

Zora Neale Hurston 1926 play Color Struck starts off by telling the story about john and Emma . John is a light skinned man and his partner is Emma who is which a black women , and they are competing in a cakewalk. Although throughout the story Emma becomes jealous of a mulatto girl named Effie because john and the lighter skinned girl have multiple interactions. The play is about how both john and Emma was supposed to compete in the cake walk they been training for and were suppose to win. but they ended up not competing together because Emma had enough john messing with Effie, then Effie and john wind-up winning. At that moment they both had enough and with their separate ways and play fast forward to 20 years later. 20 years later Emma had a beautiful baby girl and John wife had sadly passed away. Emma daughter became sick and needed a doctor , john decided to go by Emma house and talk to her but some things but went left. The play ended with Emma daughter passing because the doctor didn’t come fast enough.

Overall I enjoyed reading the play. It was interesting seeing the perspective of the darker skinned women thinking she’s not good enough for her men because of a light skinned women. Also I think in some parts of the play that john was in the wrong and Emma was to. I also think Emma let her insecurities and jealousy get the best of her throughout the play.
