The short story “The First Day,” written by Edward P. Jones, demonstrates the struggles of black education and disconnect within the school system. The process of the mother and daughter on their way to the first day of school magnifies the inequality of the school system. By closely reading and following their journey one is able to see the complex nature of navigating the school system. In order to best understand and identify this within the text it is essential to look at the part of the story where the mother and daughter are turned away from the first school and the process they take to register at the second and final school. While it is not explicitly apparent in the text, inference and an understanding of the events prove the struggles apparent in the school system at the time of the story.
