She often judges people of color and experiences hateful thoughts towards them during innocent interactions, and she later attempts to justify those demeaning thoughts. The author demonstrates the complex and contradictory relationship between white people and people of color where the former alternates between sentiments of culpability for the oppression of a race, but also embraces the power dynamic that places her at a societal advantage.
