In “Shift”, Nalo Hopkinson uses a change of perspective by splitting the narration for two characters to explore how two related people, siblings, can have different identities and perception of how they fit in their individual “blackness”. As Caliban choses to flee his black culture- to conform to the standards of white women, Ariel chooses to embrace it. The comparing and contrasting of Caliban and Ariels perspective through their own personal dialogues, inner thoughts, and actions allows for readers to see the difference between how they see themselves and how other characters see themselves in both black and white society. Additionally, the overall relationship and confrontation between Caliban and Ariel exploits their perspectives on eachothers “blackness”.
