The First Day Wasn’t Too Great

In the fictional short story, “The First Day”, an African American woman takes her daughter to sign up for school the very first day. The first school they visit is right by the church which the mother attends. They are rejected instantly by the woman at the front desk because they don’t belong to the district. However, the school is only a block away from the district line. During the registration process of the second school they visit, it shows that the mother is illiterate. Even though there isn’t a direct connection between the illiteracy of the mother and the district schooling system, there are deeply underlying issues with the inequality of education children from different districts can receive.
