Standing up to Authority

In “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks, Brooks warns against the consequences that come with rebellion. He uses repetition of the word “we” to promote the idea that this rebellion against authority happens with community. He names the bad things they do such as skipping class and drinking. He speaks about a golden shovel and death — implying that the characters were defying authority and digging themselves a grave at the same time.
