Differences in Black Communities

In A Butterfly on F Street, by Edward P. Jones, there is a stark contrast in the living conditions between two families in the story. On one hand, Mildred and her children lived in a well off neighborhood in the Northeast quadrant of D.C. Mildred’s ex-husband and his new wife lived in the Southeast quadrant in a poorer neighborhood, called Anacostia. When this is examined, it helps us to realize that although black people share the same skin color with each other, not every black person is the same when it comes to things such as wealth, class and power. A Butterfly on F Street helps to highlight differences in wealth amongst two black families in D.C. which helps to remind readers that all black people have different backgrounds.
