If Celie and Nettie were a modern day book cover…

The character development within Alice Walker’s novel, The Color Purple, is quite critical. While Celie, the protagonist, develops drastically based on her environment and other characters around her, so does her sister Nettie overseas. Although Celie’s character is more focal, readers are able to see the two sisters’ identities unravel over the course of the novel. Hence why I decided to create the magazine collage of selected words outlined in the shape of two figures. It is a reaction to how these bodies (Celie and Nettie) progress and unfold in the end. The general mood of the collage can be read as positive, empowering, driven and motivating, based on the chosen words for each character. However, the words were chosen in response to the growth of these two sisters by the end of the narrative, words that may describe them over the progression of their character development. While simplistic in form, the magazine collage serves as a portrayal of the theme of female transformation and expression, and ultimately what may describe Celie and Nettie as individual females.

Is there a specific passage/letter/scene from the text that comes to mind when reading the words chosen to describe Celie and/or Nettie? If so, is it something they say, or an action or decision?
