The Educational Resources Center has acquired several new digital tools for K-12 education:

  • Bookflix – A digital literacy resource that pairs more than 120 animated stories from Weston Woods.  The fiction and nonfiction pairings are designed to strengthen early literacy skills while exposing young learners to real-world concepts
  • ProQuest CultureGrams – CultureGrams are country/state/province reports. The database includes: images, slideshows, streaming videos, sortable data tables and graphs, interviews with natives from countries around the world, and recipes for each country.
  • Storia – Offers hundreds of fiction and nonfiction ebooks in English and Spanish for grades PreK-3rd grade.
  • Ebsco Flipster has made available many children’s magazines, such as Ask, Cricket, and National Geographic for Kids. Find titles by searching the catalog.

AccessPediatrics from McGraw-Hill Medical covers the entire span of pediatric practice, from neonatology through adolescent medicine. Updated regularly and optimized for viewing on any device, this comprehensive online pediatric resource provides  access to information essential for completing evaluation, diagnosis, and case management decisions. This collection includes 37 leading pediatric textbooks, videos, and cases, plus vignette style exam preparation for licensing. Revolution & Protest Online

This growing collection of video, documents, images, reports and books explores protest movements, revolutions, and civil wars around the world from the 18th century to present day. Examples in the collection include the Haitian Revolution, Russian Revolution, Indian Independence Movement and the Arab Spring. The resource allows students to browse and search material by event and theme. Safari Online Learning

The Safari 500 Online Book Collection has changed! Now called Safari Online Learning, this digital package includes unlimited user access, exclusive O’Reilly-produced content, more than 250 additional publishers, videos, customized accounts and content to match emerging career trends like big data, artificial intelligence, gaming and more. This O’Reilly product specializes in technology introduction books for software, programming languages, marketing, cloud computing and other business topics. The American Slavery Collection, 1820–1922 from the American Antiquarian Society
This digital edition of the American Antiquarian Society’s extraordinary holdings of slavery and abolition materials delivers more than 3,600 works published over the course of more than 100 years. Materials include books, pamphlets, graphic materials, and ephemera on topics that include the Missouri Compromise and the founding of Liberia; the first National Anti-Slavery Society Convention in 1837 and the Compromise of 1850; the Emancipation Proclamation and the establishment of “Redeemer” state governments; the birth of “Jim Crow” and the expansion of segregation through the early 1920s. Women and Social Movements International
This resource of primary source material focusing on women’s international activism since the mid-nineteenth century includes proceedings of women’s international conferences, books, pamphlets, articles from newspapers and journals, as well as diary entries. The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, Anna Lord Strauss Papers, and the Inter-American Commission on Women’s Records are some of the materials you will find. Thesaurus Linguae Latinae
The Thesaurus Linguae Latinae is a comprehensive Latin to Latin dictionary based on all available Latin texts (including inscriptions and other non-literary material) for the period up to 600 AD. Its primary uses are etymology and exhaustive examples of usage. Continuously published and updated in Germany since 1894. Economist Digital Archive
The Gale Cengage Economist Historical Archive provides researchers searchable online access to The Economist back to 1843. This important resource covers international news with a focus on finance, politics and business. It also includes current science and technology insight. Chinese Newspapers Collection
Full-text access to 22 English-language Chinese historical newspapers published between 1832 and 1953. Topics include the end of imperial rule in China, the Taiping Rebellion, the Opium Wars with Great Britain, the Boxer Rebellion and 1911 Revolution, and the subsequent founding of the Republic of China. The full-image newspapers provide searchable access to articles, advertisements, editorials, cartoons, and classified ads. BBC Shakespeare Plays
The new collection BBC Shakespeare Plays includes streaming video (with searchable transcripts) of thirty seven plays by Shakespeare featuring some of Britain’s most distinguished theatrical talent, such as Helen Mirren, Claire Bloom, Anthony Hopkins,  Ben Kingsley, and others. Knowledge Unlatched
BC Libraries continues to support this open access project, which funds the “opening” of selected eBooks from scholarly publishers. This year includes a STEM section, which is particularly strong in the environmental sciences.  KU titles are also findable when searching our online catalog. Early Franciscan Sources and Early Commentaries on the Rule of the Friars Minor provide electronic access to significant writing by Francis of Assisi, Clare of Assisi, and Isabelle of France, as well as to medieval commentary on the monastic rule which governed the life of the Franciscans. Science of Synthesis
Boston College users now have access to individual monograph titles in the Science of Synthesis (SoS) database (Thieme Medical Publishers). This newly-updated, online reference work provides information on the full array of topics related to energy, one of the most significant challenges facing humanity. New Springer Nature Journals Added

The Strategic, Defence & Security Studies Classic Archive Journal Collection from Taylor & Francis contains backfile coverage, starting from the first issue, of the thirty journals shown in this PDF (access individual titles through the BC Libraries catalog). The collection includes Intelligence & National Security, Journal of Strategic Studies, Security Studies, Survival and Terrorism & Political Violence. Access to these journals support faculty and student research in security, peace and terrorism studies. Queen Victoria’s Journals is a digital edition of the complete journals of Queen Victoria, covering the entirety of her reign (1837 to 1901) and beginning when she was thirteen years old, five years before she took the throne. This resource provides high quality scans of each journal page with a facing transcription, and the journal’s full text is searchable. Additional features include a browsing index of names and places, an interactive timeline of Queen Victoria’s life, linked resources on the culture and history of Victorian England, and a gallery of Queen Victoria’s watercolors and drawings. Women’s Issues and Identities includes primary source material that focuses on the social, political, and professional achievements of women from the nineteenth and twentieth century. Among the unique collections in this resource are Planned Parenthood Federation of America Records, 1918-1984, Records of Women’s Peace Union 1921-1940, and Grassroots Feminist Organizations (includes Boston Area Second Wave Organizations, 1968-1998).

Brill Dictionary of Ancient Greek  An unabridged dictionary of Ancient Greek, comparable in scale to the standard, Liddell and Scott, but with more coverage of later classical and patristic Greek, including papyri and inscriptions. LGBTQ History and Culture Since 1940, Part 1. One of the oldest daily newspapers in the United States, the Boston Herald was “more sober and less sensational than the Globe during its heyday in the first half of the twentieth century,” says Jim O’Toole, Clough Professor of History. Visit ForeignAffairs.com to access articles and media from this distinguished journal published by the Council of Foreign Relations that are only available online. Sacramentum Mundi Online

New Web of Science Resources

The Web of Science database platform has added a wide range of new component databases, including Book Citation Index to find book citation data from 2005 on, Data Citation Index to find published datasets, Derwent Innovations Index, Zoological Record, various international search options and more. These resources can be found by clicking the orange check-box next to Web of Science Core Collection (the default) to open the drop-down menu showing component databases. Check with your Subject Librarian to learn more about any of these new additions to the Web of Science.
