Perseverance in Practice – KIBO

Example #1: A child tries to scan her blocks but keeps missing the barcode. Despite feeling frustrated, she keeps trying and eventually scans the barcode on her 5th try.
Example #2: A child tries to program KIBO to move to the edge of the classroom rug using a repeat loop. He has tried out all of the number parameters and none make KIBO travel the right amount. Instead of giving up, he starts exploring other repeat loop parameters that he has never seen before. After trial and error, he finds that he can use “repeat until near”.
Example #3: Two children discuss ways to improve the program they built together.

Teacher Insights on Practicing Perseverance

The following excerpts were taken from interviews with teachers who were asked to describe instances in which their preschoolers practiced perseverance, as well as times in which the teacher personally practiced perseverance while implementing the Coding as Another Language-KIBO curriculum.

I really had to persevere to keep going and make sure the kids had [an] opportunity weekly to be a part of this program. Perseverance was hard because when you don’t know how to make something work—some my friends in my class shut down because they can’t, but once they seen others trying, they all begin to persevere, to try to get it.
