Remember the Titans was a film based off a true story covering a high school football team divided by race and prejudice. As black head coach Herman Boone was hired in 1971, the team must learn how to come together despite their differences. It’s been one of my favorite movies growing up and it has taught me more and more as I have watched it. There were a lot of things I didn’t understand the first time watching when I was younger. For instance, there is a scene where some of the white teammates bring their black teammates out to dinner and the go to a “whites only” restaurant. The place is practically empty and when they team asks to be seated, the owner says they are all booked for the night. One of the white players doesn’t understand, just like I didn’t understand the problem. Why couldn’t they be seated? The more I watch this movie at different points in my life, the more elements of racism I learn about.
