While the exact date of this painting is unknown, Vermeyen lived from the year 1500 to the year 1559. Therefore can deduce that the creation of his painting, “The Holy Trinity,” fell somewhere in this range. This painting depicts God welcoming Jesus back to heaven after his crucifixion, surrounded by a bright light that is being cast from above. The pair is surrounded by cherubs who are taking away the cross that Jesus was nailed to, his crown of thorns, and other images associated with the crucifixion. Other symbols of heaven are present, such as the clouds that the scene rests on, the dove in the top of the painting, and the ascended nature of the location of this scene – over the Earth. God is holding a suffering Jesus while surrounded by light, similarly to how Eva is depicted holding a suffering Topsy. Eva is preaching to Topsy of love and heaven in their moment in the verandah, as God is doing to Jesus to console his suffering.
