The first “Ricci Scholars’ Study,” organized by the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History at the University of San Francisco, takes place on June 18, 2020, from 9:00–10:15 p.m. (PDT). This online presentation will be led by M. Antoni J. Ucerler, S.J., the institute’s director, speaking on “The Samurai & the Cross: Japanese & Chinese Sources on the History of Christianity in Premodern and Tokugawa Japan.”
The Ricci Scholar’s Study is a new summer initiative at the Ricci Institute to allow for scholars to discuss research interests and works in progress. The 2020 summer program will include presentations on the study of the history of Christianity in China, Japan, and Korea.
According to the institute, Ucerler’s presentation will “introduce some of the salient events of early Japanese Christian history through artifacts as well as primary source books and manuscripts that the Ricci Institute acquired over the past several years. A number of books and manuscripts in our collection also tell the story of the influence of Chinese Jesuit texts on the scholars of the Edo period. Both before and after the prohibition of Christianity in 1614, the city of Nagasaki played a key role in the transmission of Christian culture.”

Bruno Kessler Foundation Italian-German Historical Institute welcomes expressions of interest from candidates wishing to apply for a Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Scholarship. The scholarship would support projects related to the history of the Society of Jesus. Expressions of interest are due 30 June.
Expressions are encouraged from scholars with projects on Jesuit history and who would engage with the institute’s own scholars and initiatives. The full call appears below. Research areas of interest
We welcome expressions of interest in any research area related to the history of the Society of Jesus. Candidates are encouraged to collaborate with the Institute’s initiatives and programming and with the Institute’s Research Scholars involved in Jesuit Studies.
They are also expected to engage with the wider research community by attending events and meeting.

By inviting your expression of interest, we by no means promise to fund your research or grant you a position. Proposals will be evaluated based on research quality, the researcher’s future career prospects and the availability of suitable supervision.

By July 7th 2020, the strongest proposals will be selected for continuation to the MSCA IF application (deadline 9 September 2020).

The International Society for Jesuit Studies (SIEJ) welcomes applications for the International Prize for the promotion of postdoctoral studies. The application deadline is May 30, 2020.
According to the call for application, the SIEJ offers the International Prize for the promotion of postdoctoral studies through the Endowment Fund of the EHESS and in cooperation with the European Institute of Cultural Sciences P. Manuel Antunes and in association with CIDH – Alberta University/Doctoral Program in Global Studies.
The prize is intended for scholars who obtained their doctoral degree in France or abroad between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2019 and are engaged in research work, especially based on unpublished Pombaline sources, under the following general theme: “Global studies. Research on the Society of Jesus and other religious orders in the 18th century, on the religious policy of the government of the Marquis de Pombal and on its national and international repercussions.”
Two prizes will be awarded, each with an award of 8.000€ each. Stéphane Audoin-Rouzeau, Director General of the Endowment Fund, will chair the review committee. Enrollment in the SIEJ is highly recommended.

Requirements of the application file:
– Letter of application
– Post-doctoral research project with chronogram and indication of expected results (written in French or English, and in Spanish, Italian or Portuguese for nationals of the countries concerned, with a maximum length of 10.000 characters)
– Curriculum vitae
– Completion report (when there is a completion report), or copy of the diploma and summary of the thesis
– Two letters of recommendation
– A welcome letter in an EHESS research unit
