January 2025 Ed Tech Newsletter

Happy New Year, and welcome to the start of another semester! As we wrap up preparation for courses, I want to share a few updates and reminders to help you kick off the spring semester smoothly. Let’s get started!

Panopto Lecture Capture Updates

Scheduling Course Lecture Capture

IMPORTANT: Due to technical issues with the ITS lecture capture request form, please follow these temporary procedures:

Full Semester Recordings

Watch for an email this afternoon with a pre-filled Google Form to opt in for semester-long recordings for eligible rooms (view rooms here). This form contains the latest course schedule for your convenience.

Individual Sessions

If you need to schedule individual recordings—such as for a one-off, makeup, or special session—please email Law Faculty Services and include the following information:

  • Course name
  • Room location
  • Date
  • Start and end times
  • Video visibility

Video Permissions

As a reminder, your recordings are hidden from students by default. If you want your students to access your course recordings, you can update your course folder permissions to make them available immediately after processing. Otherwise, you’ll need to make individual recordings available upon student request.

Lecture Capture Retention Policy

The video retention policy has been updated for greater flexibility. Videos that haven’t been viewed for 9 months are archived. After this period, they are retained for an additional 15 months before being marked for deletion. To learn more about the archival and video removal policies, check out the details here.

Thank You for Participating in the AI Advent Calendar

A huge thank-you to everyone who participated in the AI Advent Calendar! If you’re looking to boost your generative AI literacy, this is your one-stop shop for practical and engaging activities. So far, two participants have completed over 80% of the challenges. Amazing work! There’s still time to participate—complete more activities to enter the drawing. Two lucky winners will receive Starbucks gift cards. Winners will be announced this Friday, January 10th. Check out the Advent Calendar here and join the fun!

Prepare Your Canvas Sites for Spring

If you’re getting ready to set up your Canvas course sites, make sure to check out these resources to streamline your preparation:

  • Law School Specific Guides
  • Center for Teaching Excellence Instructor Guides

These guides provide step-by-step instructions to ensure your course materials are organized and accessible to students. You can view last month’s newsletter to get quick links to the specific items you need assistance with.

Need a Generative AI Policy for Your Course?

Feeling uncertain about where to start with a generative AI policy for your course? Don’t worry—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but that’s where our AI Policy GPT can help. It’s a great first step for exploring ideas, asking questions, and even finding resources to learn more. The tool is conversational and collaborative by design, making it easy to dive in at your own pace. If you’d like more personalized support, I’m happy to provide one-on-one consultations to help craft a policy that aligns with your teaching goals and values.

SeatGen and Nomenscio Reminders

A quick refresher on these tools:

  • SeatGen: This tool provides an easy way to see student photos and name pronunciations directly in your Canvas site. You can also use it to manage seating charts and attendance. Learn more here.
  • Nomenscio: This tool allows you to share your name’s pronunciation and other key information. Get started with Nomenscio here.

Law School Recording Studio

The Law School has its own recording studio space for things like remote interviews, recording asynchronous course materials, special projects, and more. You can email me directly to learn more about the space or, if you’d like to book time in the studio, fill out this form.

Upcoming Ed Tech Workshops

Due to the shortened time frame between the winter break and the start of classes, I’ll be spreading out my Ed Tech workshops this semester. Stay on the lookout for details on planned programming. You can always check out past training sessions on the Ed Tech Blog to get up to speed with supported classroom and online technology resources.

Upcoming training opportunities include:

  • Virtual Whiteboarding
  • Poll Everywhere
  • Generative AI

Stay tuned for dates and registration details. These sessions are a great way to refresh your skills or try out new tools.

Here’s to a productive and inspiring spring semester! As always, feel free to reach out with questions or for one-on-one consultations.
