August 2024 Ed Tech Newsletter

As we count down the final weeks of summer, I wanted to ensure you’re prepared for the upcoming semester. This newsletter covers important information and guides for setting up your Canvas sites, requesting Panopto lecture capture schedules, and other important updates to the Ed Tech software available to you here at BC.

Final Ed Tech Workshop Reminder

On Thursday, August 8th at 10:30 am, I’m hosting the last workshop in our summer series on generative AI. We’ll cover tools and techniques to help you create assets for your course, including how to use AI to generate additional course materials such as legal cases, training scenarios, simulations, images for slides and more. I have some fun examples in store that you won’t want to miss!

When: August 8th at 10:30am
Where: Law Library 300 or virtually via Zoom

You can read more about this and other workshops here.

Student Name Pronunciation Information Coming Soon

We’re finalizing the system to access preferred names, pronouns, and student name pronunciations through your Canvas site. Look out for detailed information in the coming days. Rest assured, this feature will be available before the semester begins.

Preparing Your Fall 2024 Canvas Sites

To help you get your Fall 2024 courses up and running smoothly, here are the key steps for setting up your Canvas site:

  1. Prepare Your Canvas Site:
    • If you’ve taught the course before, import previous course materials.
    • For new courses, use a Law School Template or start from scratch.
  2. Update the Syllabus Page:
    • Edit the syllabus to include current semester information.
  3. Update Course Materials:
    • Make necessary updates to other course materials or assignments. Learn more about designing your Canvas site here.
  4. Publish Your Content:
    • Ensure all content you want students to see is published.
  5. Publish Your Course:
    • Make sure your course is published and visible to students.

Schedule your course to be recorded

Remember, your courses are not automatically scheduled for lecture capture. To have your classes recorded this semester, use the lecture capture request form.

Check Your Video Permissions

Your recordings are hidden from students by default. To allow students to access your course recordings, update your course folder permissions to make recordings available immediately after processing. Otherwise, you’ll need to make individual recordings available per student request.

Remember to Adjust Schedule Changes

Your recording schedule does NOT automatically update if your class moves to a different classroom or time. If you change rooms after scheduling your lecture capture recordings, notify us at atrinbox@bc.edu to move your recording schedules. Please give at least 24 hours’ notice for schedule changes.

Canvas UI Updates

Canvas recently made some changes to the way you manage assigning due dates to interactive elements of your Canvas course. They are now revamping the “Assign To” interface to more closely resemble its original design following community feedback. The revision should be released in the coming weeks. If you need to adjust assignment due dates before the new interface is restored, follow these instructions.

Panopto UI Updates

Panopto is getting UI updates to reduce clicks for common tasks such as managing sharing, renaming, and moving folders. The main change removes the gear icon for folder settings and adds folder management options to a drop-down menu. Read more about the updates here.
