In many countries, businesses have used the idea of a “family business” for many reasons, though not all good. Though sometimes family businesses can be a good idea, especially in local businesses and name for actual family-owned businesses, many manipulate this label as familial in other ways. Many people and customers especially like the idea of supporting something that is local and small owned, often a much more personal experience and relationship with customers. But, in some cases, a business familial relationship can be harmful— as is with many of the father/daughter factories. First off, factories are a much different setting than something like a family owned pizza store or something else small. When these factories assume this identity as a “family-business” it puts a stronger hold and feeling of responsibility on workers— even when owners use this false sense of familial relations. This is especially concerning with some companies that take it too far— such as controlling personal things that do not relate to work like relationships, pregnancies, and personal health. Often, this is used as a hook and manipulation of both customers and workers, as it leaves workers with an extra sense of responsibility, customers with a false feeling of local support to a business that is not truly caring or personal as seeming.
