The concept of freeganism works against the damaging consequences of modern food systems, especially in America. The action of commodifying food makes a consumer promote throwaway culture and feel that food products will always be readily available. The US having fully stocked and colorful supermarkets, also enhances these ideologies. Being hyper-focused on the aesthetics of our produce and the efficiency of our fast-food chains leads to overproduction and ultimately food waste. Another reason food is easily accessible is due to increasing technology and minimization of human interaction. Although we often disregard how this can hurt individuals, having this system makes people antisocial and reliant on unhealthy foods. Many of these negative impacts can be blamed or related to capitalism which is the main lifestyle freegans want to avoid. Freegans aim to live off of pre-existing waste and reduce their consumerist practices by dumpster diving, sharing food, and also repurposing. Although this lifestyle is nonconventional it raises awareness of the issues of food waste and consumerism that are exploited in a traditional capitalistic society. They see the true value of what we consider ex-commodities. Questioning such items is important since companies often throw away their goods solely because they are seen as nonprofitable not because they are not usable. Capitalistic rationale promotes much product waste which also includes food waste. Although freegans propose a temporary solution, it would not be sustainable on a global scale because it relies on the waste produced by capitalist society. I do think it is a good step to criticize modern-day consumption and make us as consumers aware of our purchasing habits. It also encourages people to analyze and critique the habits of the companies we buy from.
