Though many of us hold ourselves to blame for the epidemic of trash waste that has been building up more and more over the years, it is not apparent that many aspects of this are not actually the individual’s fault. As plastic and other packaging materials have become cheaper and cheaper, making reusable options often the more expensive choice, many corporations have redirected their efforts into single-use items, which lead to single stream waste. Especially in many cases, where these items of waste are not recyclable and are barely reusable. But, despite this, many movements have placed the blame of waste and pollution on the individual, even if that is not necessarily the case. Though it may seem directly like the consumer is the victim to blame for this, many corporations have made this switch from reusable to single-use for many items– from bottles of soda, plastic not glass, to the clamshell packaging of grocery store fruit. In several cases, this is the only option for consumers, whether or not they would have chosen a more reusable or healthy alternative, yet the blame is still redirected for individual guilt. With this, instead of taking the blame of the waste, it is redirected all around the world away from the companies, providing a convenient escape from this blame and making it a much less easily solvable solutions.
