{"id":865,"date":"2022-01-17T22:37:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-17T22:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bc.edu\/uncommonsense\/?page_id=865"},"modified":"2022-01-17T22:37:00","modified_gmt":"2022-01-17T22:37:00","slug":"what-is-argumentation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.bc.edu\/uncommonsense\/what-is-argumentation\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Argumentation?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8220;Argumentation&#8221; refers to how well (convincingly) you layout the text-based details and reasoning for your claim and explain the possible stakes of your claim.&nbsp;&nbsp;The two primary areas I look for when assessing the strength of&nbsp; your argument are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1- the clarity and effectiveness of how you organize or layout your argument.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Do you provide your reader with all the necessary contextualizing information the need to understand your points?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Do you present your points in the most effective order?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Do you clearly introduce the different parts of your argument and how they relate to the overall claim and\/or stakes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2- the strength and clarity of the logic on and with which you construct your argument.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Is the premise of your claim solid?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often faulty premises can occur: when the objects of analysis is too large or vague; when the object of analysis is not actually text-based; when the claim is not actually about the stated object of analysis; and\/or when the premise is based on some degree of misreading (i.e.&nbsp; making a claim that depends on the paragraph you&#8217;re analysis being the first time a character is introduced, when it turns out that the character actually appears in an earlier scene).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Is the method of illustrating the claim appropriate to the scope of analysis?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Do you demonstrate an awareness of the limits of its premise\/logic\/and method of arguing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Does your method of arguing consist of circular reasoning, begging the question, or some other <a href=\"https:\/\/readingblackmatter.wordpress.com\/2019\/01\/19\/whats-a-logical-fallacy\/\">type of logical fallacy<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/michelerosenthal.com\/portfolio\/logical-fallacies\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schoolsnoteverything.files.wordpress.com\/2018\/09\/robot-logical-fallacies.png\" alt=\"robot logical fallacies\" class=\"wp-image-220\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Imaged accessed at:&nbsp;https:\/\/michelerosenthal.com\/portfolio\/logical-fallacies\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freetech4teachers.com\/2015\/11\/videos-and-poster-explaining-logical.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schoolsnoteverything.files.wordpress.com\/2018\/09\/thou-shalt-not-commit-logical-fallacies1.png\" alt=\"thou shalt not commit logical fallacies\" class=\"wp-image-222\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>image accessed at:\u00a0https:\/\/www.freetech4teachers.com\/2015\/11\/videos-and-poster-explaining-logical.html<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Other Argumentation Resources:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some types of analysis require come with particular logical requirements.  Probably the one you&#8217;ll use as a student is Comparative Analysis (or &#8220;Compare and Contrast&#8221;).
