Assessment Details
Academic Year: 2020-2021 Level: Undergraduate
Campus Department: Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences [UG and Grad]
Program Type: Core [UG]
Program Name: Music Core (Link)
Description of Data Collection:
Sections of a core class will submit a sample of papers or projects for review as to technical writing, and the understanding of historical, cultural and/or aesthetic contexts.
Review Process:
Assessment of all classes will be reviewed by members of the full-time faculty with recommendations made to the chair. Review of music core classes will occur annually over the summer.
Resulting Program Changes:
The focus of last year’s assessment, on the discrepancies in the writing requirements between different sections, will remain a focus. As a number of sections based written requirements on live concert reviews, this format was disrupted due to Covid, though some professors found creative alternatives or were able to still attend live events while observing Covid regulations. As we return to a more normal teaching structure, we will again review this aspect. This year our Core reviews were in turn reviewed by the University Core Program. This review returned helpful ideas about strengthening a look at reflective pedagogy. To that end we will be asking all sections of MUSA1100,1200,1300 to include a statement about formative education in the syllabus with some assignment or project designed to reflect on and evaluate the development of skills for achieving a meaningful life, and/or for integrating knowledge across disciplines. We will use an added question in student evaluations to assess this component.
