Description of Data Collection:

A variety of data sources are used to determine whether Ph.D. program graduates have achieved program outcomes. These include: (a) comprehensive examinations at the end of the second year of coursework; (b) annual Ph.D. student surveys (to assess standards and outcomes recommended by AACN; (c) student evaluations of courses and faculty; (d) assessment of number of student publications and presentations while enrolled in the PhD program; (e) annual meetings between the graduate associate dean and PhD students and fellowship supervisors; (f) quality of doctoral dissertations; (g) graduates’ reports of scholarly productivity and research funding in the PhD program alumni survey (every 3 years); and (h) reports from faculty who teach doctoral courses and/or mentor PhD students.

Review Process:

Data are collected and reviewed by the graduate office, graduate associate dean and Ph.D. program committee and shared with the faculty at the annual program evaluation day and in the CSON annual report. The data are also discussed in detail with the Connell Leadership Group and the faculty who teach in the Ph.D. program. Recommendations are made and acted upon by the Ph.D. Program committee.

Resulting Program Changes:

Based upon data from faculty, students, and the sources noted above in #3, the PhD Program committee is currently engaged in a comprehensive process of assessment and curriculum revision. In the first phase of this review, the AACN recommendations, PhD program objectives and PhD program course objectives were reviewed and cross-referenced. Qualitative interviews were conducted with all key stakeholders including current students, alumni, faculty and other members of our community of interest. Thematic results were collated and a comparison between current the BC curriculum and AACN benchmarks was completed. A review of these findings was presented to the CSON faculty for additional comment and recommendations. The PhD committee, along with the newly appointed PhD Program Director, are undertaking a comprehensive curriculum revision based on the findings of this review.
