Assessment Details
Academic Year: 2020-2021 Level: Undergraduate
Campus Department: Student Affairs [UG and Grad]
Program Type: Co-Curricular Program [UG and Grad]
Program Name: The Body Project
Description of Data Collection:
The Body Project Collaborative has a pre and post survey validated in the research that measures thin ideal internalization, dietary restraint, body dissatisfaction, eating disorder symptoms, and negative affect. It measures effect size from pre to post. This pre/post survey was provided to students via Campus labs. Of 32 students who completed the 4 hour program and took both the pre and post assessments, effect size was medium (0.39) for thin ideal internalization; body dissatisfaction (0.22); and low for eating disorder symptomatology (0.13) and dietary restraint (0.13); and a negative effect size for negative affect (-0.03), which is uncommon.
Review Process:
Campus dietitian and graduate student intern in OHP collect the data and analyze the data pre/post each session.
Resulting Program Changes:
One recommendation for Body Project programming is to increase the number of students who do the full 4 hour program, and improve pre/post assessment compliance especially 1 year post program. Marketing to get more in attendance is a continued goal. Also, given last two years data showing a large reduction in thin ideal internalization and potential reduction 1- year post of eating disorder symptomatology, a version for male-identified students will be explored as a pilot program to assist male-identified students who make up 1:3 individuals with eating disorders and are at high risk for body image disturbance. The post-assessment 1 year out from program is given to see if effect sizes hold, which they have, but with a small n we need more data. Only one person filled out the post-assessment 1 year out between fall 2019 and fall 2020.
