Assessment Details
Academic Year: 2020-2021 Level: Undergraduate
Campus Department: Student Affairs [UG and Grad]
Program Type: Co-Curricular Program [UG and Grad]
Program Name: Fall 2020 Student Involvement Fair
Description of Data Collection:
The Office of Student Involvement measured the involvement outcome of the first year student experiences at the Involvement Fair. The main focus to uncover connections between students and opportunities included questions about what kind of opportunities first year students signed up for, and additionally, how many involvement opportunities they actually took advantage of by becoming a member of the student organization or being accepted into a leadership opportunity or peer engagement program. Our survey was sent out one month after the Student Involvement Fair for first year students to report on their involvement journey over the course of their first month, as a result of their attendance at the fair. The survey instrument consisted of 11 questions via a Google Form which was sent to the entire first year class. 388 students completed the survey, which was an increase from 343 the prior year.
Review Process:
The Graduate Assistant for Student Organization sent out the survey to the first year students. The survey was open for one month (October 2020). Once closed, the survey data was analyzed by the Graduate Assistant of Student Organizations and the Assistant Director of Student Organizations. This data is interpreted by the two staff members and used to implement changes to improve on the future Involvement Fair. This data will be collected annually, after each Student Involvement Fair.
Resulting Program Changes:
In light of this unprecedented year the fair was moved to a completely virtual format so many of our considerations from last year’s E1A’s did not apply to this event as those recommendations reflected an in person event experience. One recommendation we were able to apply to this years program was providing clearer expectations to all of our participating student organizations. Last year, we recommended that we set expectations for all organizations registered for the Student Involvement Fair to have a clear follow up communication plan. We did this by sending multiple email reminders to registered student organizations leading up to the event to follow up with all students who shared an interest in their organization. Additionally, following the fair, in our September 14, 2020 student organization newsletter we sent another reminder to all organization leaders to follow up with all students who expressed interest. Of the 388 students who completed our survey we found that 95% of students responded that they did receive follow up emails from 1-7 organizations. 5% of respondents did not receive any follow up emails. We also learned that at the time of the survey 75% of respondents became involved with one of the organizations that they learned about at the fair. 15% were in the process of applying, bringing the total to 90% respondents having some type of involvement with a student organization. This highlights the effectiveness of our reminders to organizations to follow up with and connect with those students who expressed interest in their organization.
