Assessment Details

  Academic Year: 2020-2021         Level: Undergraduate

Campus Department: Student Affairs [UG and Grad]

Program Type: Co-Curricular Program [UG and Grad]

  Program Name: Thrive Mentor Program

Description of Data Collection:

The two-tiered assessment evaluated two groups of students, the test group (participants’ of Thrive) and a control group (sophomore women not involved in Thrive). The assessment measured respondents’ level of self-esteem in January (Thrive’s onset) and the end of April (the end of Thrive) using two previously vetted scales: State Self Esteem Scale (Heatherton, Polivy 1991) a 20-item scale that measures a participant’s self-esteem at a given time and The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), a 10-item measure designed to assess the degree to which situations in one’s life are appraised as stressful. Overall the data reflect favorable results for students involved in Thrive versus their non-Thrive peers on both the Self Esteem Scale as well as the Perceived Stress Scale. Thrive participants indicated an increase in self esteem on 17 out of 20 questions whereas the control group indicated a decline in self esteem on 13 out of 20 questions. Thrive participants report more positive change pre to post in perceptions of their body image, their intelligence, and how respected they feel. They also report feeling less self-conscious and less worried about how others perceive them. Thrive participants reported being able to manage stress better than the control group as indicated by responses to the Perceived Stress Scale.

Review Process:

The Director of the Women’s Center administers the online pre and post survey. The pre is implemented in January just before the kick off of the program and the post is implemented at the end of April. The Director of the Women’s Center interprets and analyzes the data with guidance from the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.

Resulting Program Changes:

Based on the feedback from the survey I plan to continue to offer the program to allow more students to be part of it because it was such a valuable experience. A positive correlation can be made between sophomore women’s involvement in Thrive and their self-reported positive changes on the Heatherton and Polivy self-esteem scale and the Perceived Stress Scale, both of which are reliable and valid measures.
