This theme of women\u2019s handcraft stands in contrast to New England\u2019s burgeoning industrialization at the time. Themes of work, and particularly women\u2019s role in industrial society, were highlighted by artists as different as Gustave Courbet (1819\u201377) in France, Winslow Homer (1836\u20131910) in
